Methane is considered a strong greenhouse gas and its release from various natural processes such as decomposition combined with the release of dissolved methane from the ice caps is a source of significant concern and potential acceleration of global warming.

One goal then is to figure out how to consume these available methane sources and turn them into usable fuel.

Additional sources of methane include landfills and other bio waste sites, wood or coal gassification (more), farmers manure piles as well as other decomposing bio materials. An interesting twist on these sources could be the transition from methane to another energy source like hydrogen using Fuelvertor™ technologies(more).
